3 great veggie food places, Rotterdam

Janets brother had the travel jitters again and went on a trip to the Philippines. That means his house in The Hague is available for us to stay in. The perfect time to visit The Hague again. This city has so much to offer. It’s a little bit of a citytrip in our own country, when we stay at his place. Despite all the fun things The Hague has to offer, we decided to also spend some time in Rotterdam: we heard it’s an upcoming city, definately worth a visit. We explored where to go for veggie food and yummy drinks. In this article we share 3 of the places we tried.

1. Bertmans, Rotterdam
Around 9.30 am we traveled from The Hague to Rotterdam by train. We took a tram and got out at Zwaanhals, a street we wanted to visit. From there we walked to Bertmans: the first address on our list. What a cosy place! It was quite busy already, when we arrived: famillies, couples, singles and friends, a mix of everything. And an interesting menu for vegetarians and vegans as well.
We tried: buckwheat pancakes with banana, a curcuma latte, fruit crumble and a chai latte.
I loved the crumble! Filling, tasty, delicious warm fruit. And the cashew cream on top perfected this breakfast dish. The chai latte was made of actual tea leafs and it was a little bit spicy. The pancakes were yummy too, but would have tasted even better served with red fruit for example. Janet liked the curcuma latte, it had a bit of a spicy taste too.
Our verdict: a great start of our trip to Rotterdam! If you have a small budget Bertmans might not be the place to go, but we thought the prices were very reasonable considering the ingredients used. It’s a place with a great vibe and the people working there were welcoming and friendly.

2. Lof der Zoetheid, Rotterdam.
When exploring Rotterdam a bit more, we encountered Lof der Zoetheid at Noordplein. There are 2 locations next to eachother: one where you can enjoy a high tea and a smaller location for coffee and sweet treats on the go, with a few seating tables as well. We had a coffee on the go (yay for my Klean Kanteen travel mug!) and a delicious vegan orange tahini cookie.
Our verdict: it took a few zips for us to get used to the taste of the coffee, it was a bit stronger than we are used to. The cookie was absolutely scrumptiously delicious! Orange and tahini are a perfect match. And it had a great texture: rich and crumbly. Lof der Zoetheid also has a great variety of vegan choices.

Bonus tip: there was a market right across Lof der Zotheid at Noordplein, the Rotterdamse Oogstmarkt (harvest market). Here you can buy beautiful (organic and bio) products and veggie food as well. You can find this market on the square each 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.

3. SUE Store, Rotterdam
Our 3rd address was SUE, a place where you can enjoy sweet treats. The owner loves sweet treats but also values her health. So she decided to develop healthier alternative recipes for her favourite sweet treats. Her food rapidly turned out to be a success so she is a fulltime business owner of SUE now. SUE store was closed due to a renovation, but SUE Bites Bar was open.
Our treats to go: an after eight bite, a lime key bite and a bottle of birch water.
Our verdict: my favourite was the key lime bite! Can’t get over how rich and creamy it was, and the lime flavour was fabulous too. Would love the recipe for that one! The birch water turned out to taste surprisingly good: we think it’s a nice and refreshing drink for a hot summer day.

When in Rotterdam, you just can’t skip going to the Markthal, right? Wow, the ceiling of the impressive market building is just amazing. So colourful, we liked it. But, that’s all we liked about it anyway. The meat and fish smell was overwhelming and it made us leave right after taking pictures of the ceiling.
